Gold Coast kitchen renovations: questions answered
Cost
How much does a kitchen renovation cost on the Gold Coast?
As a guide, a budget refresh runs about $12,000 to $30,000, a mid-range full renovation about $25,000 to $60,000, and premium or waterfront builds $45,000 to $94,000 or more. Your matched QBCC-licensed builder gives you a fixed-price written quote after a free in-home consult.
What drives the cost of a Gold Coast kitchen renovation up or down?
The main cost drivers are cabinetry quantity and finish (laminate versus 2-pac), benchtop material, whether the layout and plumbing move, appliance grade, and access on high-rise or canal-front sites. Labour is roughly 30 to 40 percent of the total.
What does a budget kitchen makeover cost compared to a full renovation?
A budget-tier makeover that swaps doors, benchtop and splashback on sound cabinetry typically runs $12,000 to $30,000, well below a full mid-range renovation at $25,000 to $60,000, because the existing carcasses stay in place.
How much does a premium or waterfront kitchen renovation cost on the Gold Coast?
Premium and waterfront kitchen renovations in canal-front and prestige homes generally start around $45,000 and run to $94,000 or more, reflecting custom joinery, natural stone, integrated appliances and butler's pantry additions.
Process
How long does a kitchen renovation take on the Gold Coast?
A standard mid-range kitchen renovation usually takes 6 to 12 weeks from contract signing to handover: 4 to 6 weeks of cabinetry and stone fabrication lead-in, then 2 to 4 weeks of on-site work plus finishing.
What happens during the demolition stage of a kitchen renovation?
Demolition covers strip-out of the old kitchen, disconnection of plumbing and electrical by licensed sub-trades, and skip-bin removal. On apartments and high-rise units, lift and lobby protection goes in first.
Will I get 3D design renders before work starts?
Yes. Custom cabinetry and design briefs include plan view, elevations and perspective renders for sign-off before any cabinet is fabricated, so you see the layout, joinery profiles and integrated appliances first.
Can I get a free quote and how do I start?
Submit the form with your suburb, kitchen size and budget. We respond within one business day and match you with one or two QBCC-licensed builders. The matched builder arranges a free in-home consult and a fixed-price quote, typically within five to ten working days.
Can I stay in my home during the renovation?
Usually yes, although you will be without a working kitchen for part of the build. Your matched builder discusses a temporary kitchen setup and the demolition schedule at the consult.
Compliance
Do I need a written contract for my kitchen renovation in Queensland?
Yes. In Queensland, residential building work valued over $3,300 including labour and materials must be covered by a written Domestic Building Contract complying with Schedule 1B of the QBCC Act 1991. Your matched builder provides it.
Are the builders in your network QBCC-licensed?
Yes. Every renovator we match you with holds a current Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) licence appropriate to the scope of work. The licence number and class appear on your written quote.
What does QBCC Home Warranty Insurance cover?
QBCC Home Warranty Insurance is compulsory on residential building work in Queensland over $3,300. The contractor pays the premium and the cover protects you against non-completion and defective work up to statutory limits.
Will I need council approval for my kitchen renovation?
Most like-for-like kitchen renovations do not need council approval, but structural changes, plumbing relocation and strata buildings can. Your matched builder advises what applies before work starts.
Materials
Is engineered stone still allowed in kitchen benchtops?
Engineered stone with 1 percent or more crystalline silica has been banned for manufacture, supply, processing and installation across Australia since 1 July 2024. New benchtops use low-silica alternatives such as porcelain, sintered stone, natural granite or marble.
Can I keep my existing engineered stone benchtop?
Yes. Engineered stone benchtops installed before 1 July 2024 are grandfathered and do not need replacing. Any removal or modification must follow silica-safe procedures by the licensed installer.
Which benchtop materials suit Gold Coast coastal conditions?
Porcelain and sintered stone resist heat, scratching and UV well, while sealed natural granite suits canal-front homes. Coastal exposure also favours moisture-resistant cabinetry and corrosion-resistant hardware near the beach.
What are soft-close drawers and are they standard?
Soft-close runners and hinges decelerate drawers and doors so they do not slam. Blum and Hettich soft-close hardware is specified as standard on custom cabinetry briefs through our network.

Scope
What is included in a full kitchen renovation?
A full renovation covers demolition, new cabinetry, a stone benchtop, splashback and tiling, plumbing and electrical updates, and appliance installation, all on a single fixed-price Domestic Building Contract.
Can you add a kitchen island or butler's pantry?
Yes. Island benches and butler's pantries are among the most requested additions on the Gold Coast, especially in larger Robina, Mudgeeraba and Hope Island homes. The designer confirms it fits the layout and services at the consult.
Can you update just the splashback and benchtop?
Yes. A makeover can replace the splashback (tiled, glass or stone-matched) and the benchtop while keeping the existing cabinetry, which refreshes the kitchen without the cost of a full rebuild.
Can you swap appliances into my existing kitchen?
Yes. A refresh can replace the cooktop, oven, rangehood and dishwasher into existing cabinetry openings. Larger appliance changes that alter cabinetry sizes are handled as part of a fuller renovation.
What is the difference between a makeover and a full renovation?
A makeover keeps the existing cabinet carcasses and refreshes surfaces (doors, benchtop, splashback, handles). A full renovation rebuilds the kitchen from the carcasses up, often with a new layout, plumbing and electrical.
